How To Clean A Washing Machine

1. Empty The Drum

Before you begin, make sure the drum is clear of any clothes, coins or small items. Wipe the inside of the door and the drum using a damp cloth to remove visible dirt. This first step prevents debris from circulating when you start the cleaning cycle.

2. Clean The Detergent Drawer

Pull out the detergent drawer and rinse it under warm water. Use a multi-purpose chemical or eco chemical with a small brush to reach into corners. This helps remove detergent residue that can clog the drawer or cause build-up around the dispenser. Allow it to dry before putting it back in place.

3. Wipe The Rubber Seal

The rubber seal around the door can trap moisture, dirt and detergent. Carefully pull it back and clean the folds with a sponge soaked in bleach or disinfectant. For stubborn marks, a small amount of degreaser can be used. Wipe it dry afterwards to stop mildew from forming.

4. Run A Hot Cycle

With the drum empty, add a laundry detergent or a small measure of bleach to the dispenser. Run the machine on its hottest cycle. This helps dissolve soap residue, bacteria and limescale inside the pipes and drum.

If your machine has a drum-cleaning setting, use it. For standard models, a regular hot wash works just as well. Allow the cycle to finish completely before opening the door.

5. Clean The Filter & Drain

Many washing machines have a small filter near the bottom that collects lint, hair and other debris. Place a tray or towel beneath it, open the cover and remove the filter carefully. Rinse it under warm water and scrub gently with a dishcloth. Make sure to clean the area around the filter housing too.

This step is often missed but makes a noticeable difference to performance. It also helps prevent blockages that can cause leaks or slow draining.

6. Wipe The Exterior

The outside of the machine can pick up dust, marks and splashes from everyday use. Use antibacterial and sanitising wipes or a soft cloth with a multi-purpose chemical to clean the surface, door and control panel. Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the finish.

If you’re cleaning several machines in a shared facility, keep a roll of blue and white rolls on your cleaning trolley for quick wipe downs throughout the day.

7. Keep It Fresh

Once your machine is clean, leave the door open for a short while to let air circulate and stop moisture from collecting. Repeat this full clean every few weeks depending on how often you use the machine. A regular routine prevents odours and keeps washing results consistent.
